Immigration Partnership Winnipeg wants eligible newcomers to get out and vote! 

Do you have a plan to go vote on Election day? Here are some considerations to keep in mind when you make your plan to go vote.

What To Know:

  • The upcoming election is October 24, 2018

  • The election is to elect the Mayor, city councillors, and school board trustees.

  • At the last election, only 50% of eligible voters exercised their right to vote

  • Immigrant and refugee turnout is usually pretty low.

What To Do:

  • Find out if you're eligible. Are you 18 and over, and a Canadian citizen? Have you lived in your Ward for at least six months? You're ready!

  • Get out and vote!

Why Does It Matter?

  • About 25% of Winnipeg's population are newcomers.

  • If you vote, you will have a say in how your kids schools are run

  • If you vote, you will have a say in the price of bus tickets

  • If you vote, you will have a say in small business taxes

  • If you vote, you will have a say in policing in Winnipeg

  • If you don’t vote, it’s not a democracy!

Along with other community organizations, we sent a survey to ask Winnipeg City Council candidates in the upcoming Winnipeg City Council election to provide their position on an Access Without Fear policy. Find out which of your candidates took the time to complete the survey and their views.

 

An Access Without Fear policy ensures that all residents, including undocumented migrants, have access to all city services regardless of their immigration status.
